Bats

Walk, talk and learn

Join our guided bat walks and learn about the important role bats play in so many habitats.

Sustainable Living in the Heatons regularly offers guided wildlife walks, giving you the opportunity to hear and see our local bats. We run these walks in spring and late summer.

Our spring walks begin in April. As the weather gets warmer, bats emerge hungry from their period of hibernation. Our late summer walks begin in mid-August when it is still light enough for us to see the bats feasting on bugs at dusk. Our guides take out parties of up to ten people and show you how to use our bat detection monitors to identify what you are seeing and hearing.

If you’ve already joined one of our standard walks, why not try our new experience that observes the river bats over the Mersey River.

All of our bat walks last around one hour. Tickets for the upcoming season of bat walks will be available via links on our events calendar.

Once you’ve booked, you will be contacted in advance of the day by the event leader with more details about the walk. Please note that only one of the routes is suitable if you have any mobility issues. If you would like any advice about the routes, feel free to call Mel Godfrey on 0781 005 3743.

These events are weather and temperature dependent. If it rains or the evening is too cold for the bats, we will let you know by lunchtime on the day of the event. We will postpone and rearrange as far as possible when this occurs. If you are unable to attend, please let us know at bats@slheatons.org to cancel and allow someone else to take your place.

To help SLH run more events in the future, we politely ask for a donation of £6 per adult in cash when you come. Under 18’s are free and must be accompanied by an adult. Please include all adults and children in your group when you book.
