Darley Street Community Garden

In the 1980s, the terraced houses on Darley Street were condemned and demolished, but unfortunately the footpath and gardens were left unadopted and remained an unsightly overgrown area.

In 2021, volunteers led by Love Heaton Norris, cleared the builders rubble, overgrown plants and tree roots. Flower beds were dug out and our local community generously donated a mix of plants, shrubs and bulbs. In a few short months, the basis of the community garden was created.

The Friends of Darley Street, formed in the summer of 2021, have worked hard to create a wildlife-friendly green space with a community notice board, street sign, raised beds as well as a rockery. Our Christmas tree is greatly enjoyed by our children on their way to and from school. Our Friends group also organise crafting events for the local children and our garden participates in the Lamplighters Open Garden charity event. Darley Street is now a beautiful community garden that can be enjoyed by all.

Darley Street community garden volunteers were winners of the Rising Star category in the Stockport Greenspace Volunteer Awards 2024 together with a voucher for £100 for plants and tools to help maintain this beautiful little garden. A delightful surprise for everyone.

Our Friends group meets on the 3rd Saturday of the month at 10:30 a.m. Darley Street is situated at in the heart of the Heaton Norris conservation area, at the junction of Green Lane and Alexandra Road close to the Nursery pub.
